In a major operational milestone, the Israeli Air Force successfully used the India-Israel-developed Barak-8 air defence system to intercept an Iranian drone headed toward Tel Aviv. This marks the system’s first use in live combat during the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel. The interception signals the growing importance of the defence partnership between New Delhi and Tel Aviv.

What is Barak-8 and Why Is It Significant?

Barak-8, also known as the Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM), is a modern missile defence system jointly developed by India’s DRDO and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). Designed to tackle threats like drones, fighter jets, and cruise missiles, it boasts a range of up to 100 km and can engage several targets at once.

The system features vertical launch capability, 360-degree coverage, and an active radar seeker that works alongside the MF-STAR AESA radar system. India has played a major role in developing key technologies in the missile, including propulsion and guidance, while Israel contributed advanced radar and target-tracking systems. Barak-8 is already in use by the Indian Navy and Air Force, and is being inducted into the Army as well.

India’s Strategic Role in Barak-8’s Development

This air defence system is a core part of the 'Make in India' initiative. Leading Indian companies like Bharat Dynamics, BEL, L&T, and TATA have been involved in its production and integration. In September 2021, the Indian Air Force received its first operational MRSAM unit in Jaisalmer, witnessed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Previously, India used the system to intercept a suspected Pakistani missile over Sirsa, Haryana, during Operation Sindoor, showcasing its effectiveness in real combat situations. Israel’s recent use of Barak-8 against Iranian threats demonstrates the missile's battlefield readiness and enhances its reputation globally. It also reinforces the strong defence collaboration between the two nations, backed by deals worth over $3 billion.
